Mimicking aspects of heterogeneous catalysis: generating, isolating, and reacting proposed surface intermediates on single crystals in vacuum

Article Abstract:

Monolayers of pure hydrocarbon fragments, generated and isolated at cryogenic temperatures, are intermediates in heterogeneous catalysis. The focus of attention shifted through time from highly dehydrogenated stable fragments to highly dehydrogenated reactive species, such as surface alkyls. Isolation of high coverages of these species enables the identification of fundamental reaction steps, such as beta-hydride elimination.

Hetergeneous basic catalysis

Article Abstract:

A proper understanding of the surface reaction mechanism and the functions essential for the reactions along with the accumulation of the heterogeneous base-catalyzed reactions can facilitate the development of the heterogeneous basic catalysts active for required reactions, including organic reactions. The limits and abilities of basic catalysts, and recent advancements, are discussed.

Oscillatory kinetics in heterogeneous catalysis

Article Abstract:

The rise of oscillatory kinetics as a field of study in heterogenous catalysis is described. Topics discussed include the observation of rate oscillations, mathematical modeling, catalytic OC oxidation, NO reduction as it applies to the H2 plus O2 reaction, spatiotemporal patterns, and chaotic behavior.
