Molecular self-assembly of rigid-rod alkynyl chromophores on inorganic oxide surfaces

Article Abstract:

Molecular self-assembly has been studied for rigid-rod alkynyl chromophores and inorganic oxide surfaces. Hydrolysis of surface-bound basic tin-amide moieties with acidic protons of alkynyl chromophores leads to molecular self-assembly of various rigid-rod alkynes on inorganic oxide surfaces. The new thin films were characterized by using several methods, one of which was contact-angle goniometry. The thin films seem to be densely packed. It appears, based on comparative molecular mechanics modeling, that surface anchoring of Sn-alkynyl units is necessary for highly ordered thin films that can bring on topochemical polymerization. Conjugated molecular orbitals are found throughout the system using preliminary MO calculations on a 4 x 4 model.

Dissolution behavior in water of a model hydrophobic alkali-swellable emulsion (HASE) polymer with C(sub)20 H(sub)41 groups

Article Abstract:

A model hydrophobic alkali-swellable emulsion (HASE) polymer with C(sub)20 H(sub)41 groups has been studied to investigate its dissolution behavior in water. Pyrene fluoresence probe and dynamic light scattering experiments were used. The former discovered the marked viscosity increase of the solution alpha correlates increased with intermolecular network formation and polymer dissolution. Particles swell as Alpha goes up to 0.4 and then dissolution starts.
