The chemistry and chemical ecology of octocorals

Article Abstract:

Corals belonging to the Octocorallia class have been subjected to different chemical and biochemical experiments. The results have provided scientists invaluable information regarding the chemical composition of the octocoral metabolites and their biological effects. Studies involving the Plexaura homomalla and Sinularia flexibilis species have shown that the chemical composition of the octocorals have defensive and reproductive applications. Moreover, a wide range of chemical compounds which include terpenes, prostaglandins and acetates constitute the majority of coral secretions.
