A V hard disks: the heart of digital video

Article Abstract:

Fourteen audio-video (A V) hard drives are reviewed. The Fujitsu Allegro M2915 is promoted as A V optimized and includes features such as magneto-resistive heads. However, it takes eight disks for 2GB and has a higher form factor than most 2GB drives. The HP C2490A has the slowest video capture rate and smallest memory cache buffer. It runs hot, and is not suitable for A V usage. The IBM UltraStar XP comes in 2GB and 4GB models, and is one of the highest performing models reviewed. It is possible to record and play back at high rates without dropping frames. The Quantum Grand Prix XP34301 is a 4GB drive with an embedded servo and on-the-fly error correction. Performance is good, but inner track playback rate is lower and it has a long seek time. Seagate's drives are widely regarded, with the Barracuda drive particularly noted for A V usage. The new 4GB Barracuda has a large memory cache buffer and is highly optimized for video.

Shooting stars

Article Abstract:

The overall top-rated digital video (DV) camcorder of the 13 consumer-, semipro- and professional-level products evaluated is Sony's $4,199 DCR-VX1000. It offers excellent picture quality and is a good choice for multimedia producers. Users will appreciate its optical Super SteadyShot stabilization feature, as well as a multitude of other useful, powerful features, such as interval and cut recording for creating animated moves and a memory chip in every cassette for storing time-code out- and in-points. It is also FireWire compliant, which is an advantage. Other outstanding DV camcorders include JVC Professional's $2,999 GR-DV1, which is praised for its low price, light weight and small size, and Sony's $3,199 DCR-PC7, which is noted for its compact design and multitude of features. The DCR-PC7 also has the distinction of being the most compact FireWire-outfitted camcorder of the systems evaluated.

Article Abstract:

A buyer's guide of linear and nonlinear DV editing solutions is presented. The products all support the IEEE 1394 FireWire connector. The most expensive of the six products reviewed is Como DV's Edit Factory at $19,000. This solution has limited linear editing and excellent DV hardware. Most impressive of the six is Radius MotoDV for Mac. This software is the best codec DV card available, with a superb user interface and impressive functionality. The software is priced at $599. The Sony DHR-1000 DV VCR is also rated as a top choice, due to its high reliability. This product provides DV linear editing over FireWire and allows users to incorporate analog video into their DV products. It is priced at $4,199 and provides full control of the VCR with jog and shuttle.
