AT&T Sets Its Sights on OA Market with Announcement of New Line of Information Processing Products

Article Abstract:

In March 1985, AT&T introduced a variety of office automation products. The multiuser, multitasking UNIX personal computer features an integration of voice and data communications, an English language interface and the ability to support four to nine users. Twenty-eight new UNIX software packages are available. The StarLAN, using UNIX and MSDOS operating systems, uses twisted-pair wire and modular cords. Designed for executives, the AT&T Personal Terminal is a combination computer terminal and telephone. Enhancements for the PC 6300 are also available, although they are costly.

Executives at the Mary Kay Cosmetic Company's corporate headquarters utilize the Lanier Thought Processing Messenger system in several ways. They may use the system for dictating, even when away from the office. Dictation may be phoned with the aid of a phone adapter. Telephone messages may be recorded by the Messenger, eliminating telephone tag. Even ideas can be stored on one of four hour-long cassettes provided with each executive instrument.

Cuyahoga Steel & Wire Inc. has financially benefitted from data processing. Because raw materials account for seventy to seventy-eight percent of its sales dollar, cost control is essential. The company uses a Wang VS 80 computer with 512 KB of main memory, nine workstations and two character printers. Applications include production scheduling, calculating downtime on machinery, financial and administrative reports and order processing.
