Aircraft Carrier Is OA Test Site

Article Abstract:

Two Wang VS computers, a Wang Erego III workstation, and 15,000 feet of Wang Net trunk lines are components of a network aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. The system supports word processing, data processing, electronic mail and a control system. The initial objectives were to reduce the time spent on administrative tasks and to improve productivity through standardizing and monitoring procedures. The latest technology application is the use of laser videodisc images for machine repair and servicing.

Its usefulness was demonstrated in the fall 1983 elections when information could be provided to the media much more rapidly.
