Arrays: your data never had it so big

Article Abstract:

Direct Connections' $2,999 DCS-8000, MicroNet's $4,999 DataDock DDW184PDCM100 and DirectTech's $3,199 DT-15150WAV-2AR received the highest ratings in an evaluation of twelve disk arrays. The Datadock line leads the group of tested arrays in multiple-project management because of its many features, including flexibility, removability, and comprehensive software tools. DirectTech's product was considered a great choice because of its removability feature, low price and top-notch performance. FWB's $3,790 SledgeHammer SL8200W PCI was in a group of five that got the "thumbs up" rating, and XiSor's $5,340 Xi.RAID dd.400 was in a group of three that got the "does the job" rating. Optima's $3,053 DisKovery 8200WPCI was the only disk array that was rated as needing more work. DisKovery's weakness is in the use of Quantum's A V-rated Grand Prix drives, which hinder performance. Otherwise, it is an attractive product for general purposes because of its competitive price and user-friendly software.

Get in the loop

Article Abstract:

Twelve shared storage solutions are evaluated. The configurations examined use Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL), SSA (Serial Storage Architecture) and SCSI. ATTO Technology's AccelNet Ultra, a self-contained hub and switcher, enables users to employ existing SCSI attributes in a shared environment. AccelNet Ultra is available in two-, three- and four-user configurations for $5,995, $6,995 and $7,995, respectively. MountainGate's CentraVision tower connects all devices in a full-duplex configuration. CentraVision's eight-drive tower is priced at $27,000 with Seagate Technology Barracuda drives. A nine-port Fibre Channel hub is also available for $3,200 and its host adapter kits are priced at $4,000 per seat. Seagate Technology's Cheetah 4.5 and 9.1 hard disk drives produce blazing speed that surpasses all competitors in both sustained data rates and access times. The drives enable video users to bypass RAID striping overhead and simply daisy-chain single drives together.

Ultrastorage showdown

Article Abstract:

A buyer's guide is presented of 13 Ultra 2 SCSI and Ultra DMA hard disks for digital media. The fastest drive presented is IBM's $750, UltraStar 9LZX, which consistently performs 2MBps to 3MBps faster than Seagate's Cheetahs. The most expensive product listed is Hitachi's $1,434 DK319H-18WS, which comes equipped with a Wide Ultra SCSI interface and a 18.2GB listed capacity. Seagate Medalist Pro ST391404A is the least expensive option, priced at only $315. It has a listed capacity of 9.1GB and a formated capacity of 8.691MB. Single-stream DV editors and Web designers will find an Ultra DMA offers a plethora of bandwidth. Maxtor's DiamondMax Plus is a excellent choice for them.
