DVD the hype and the hope

Article Abstract:

DVD-ROM delivers quality digital video on 4.7GB drives that hold seven times more data than comparable CD-ROMs, with future 17GB versions promising to hold up to 26 times that amount. Advantages of DVD-video include subtitle tracks, parental control and multiple language provisions. DVD-video, however, faces skeptical market acceptance despite its advantages since it does not provide exceptional quality improvements over laserdiscs, and it features a weak copyright-encryption scheme. Analysts suggest that the DVD-ROM drives that are due in the beginning of 1997 will dominate initial DVD sales. DVD-ROM drives, which will primarily appeal to multimedia developers, can play CD-ROMs and will initially offer 8X and 10X transfer speeds for between $500 and $700, with prices expected to drop to $300 by fall 1997. DVD's sophistication, coupled with growing broadband Internet access, will eventually force CD-ROM vendors to either switch to DVD or to drastically reduce their prices in order to remain competitive.

Microcosms in the making

Article Abstract:

Few large-scale VRML projects use the new features of version 2.0 of the standard, including animation, localized audio and timed events. VRML applications tend to be small and practical to accommodate the limited abilities of current PCs to display 3D graphics. Cosmo Software Marketing Dir John McCrea says VRML is a more efficient file type than Real Audio/Video and Macromedia's Shockwave and Flash technologies. McCrea says an animatd banner with Shockwave or GIF that requires 60KB to 90KB can be done with VRML using less than 10KB. Cosmo Software's new Vector program is called a 3D alternative to Flash, providing a 3D appearance for ad banners, logos and headlines. Intervista Software's WorldChart VRML-based presentation graphics software emphasizes simple 3D charts that can be viewed from various angles. Platinum Technology's personal edition of the VRCreator program features drag-and-drop VRML creation via 1,000 premade objects, sounds and behaviors.

No-compromise MMX portables

Article Abstract:

Apple's PowerBook 3400c/200, Gateway 2000's Solo 2200, and Compaq's Armada 7730 are judged the best machines in this round-up of Apple's 200MHz PowerPC processor- and 10 MMX processor-based portable computers. The machines in the review generally offer 32MB of RAM, 2GB to 3GB hard disk drives, 10X or 12X CD-ROM drives, and 24-bit color at 800 by 600 on 12-inch to 13-inch active-matrix screens. Apple's PowerBook 3400c upholds the PowerBook line's reputation for cool computing. Gateway 2000's Solo 2200 is both the smallest and the least expensive machine in the review. Compaq's Armada 7730 makes up for its lack of ergonomic design features with brute processing power, expandibility and great audio.
