Electronic Typewriter

Article Abstract:

Typing speed has not changed considerably since the 1920s but productivity has been enhanced by the electronic typewriter, beginning with the Qyx in 1978. Many of the time-consuming tasks such as formatting and corrections are incorporated as machine functions. Features to be considered when purchasing electronic typewriters include memory size, power backup, display, printer speed, automatic word wrap, automatic decimal alignment, phrase or format recall, protocol for communications linkage, search and replace for repetitive corrections. A chart listing seventeen popular electronic typewriters and their features (as of January 1983) is presented.

Voice-Activated Typewriter Is Close at Hand, Reports Kurzweil

Article Abstract:

Ray Kurzweil, head of Kurzweil Speech Systems and Kurzweil Computer Products, believes that by 1986 there will be a voice activated typewriter with an unlimited vocabulary. Technicians at KSS are working on such a machine using an artificial intelligence system that will make it possible for a typewriter to recognize the sound patterns of human speech. When developed, a typewriter with automated speech recognition (ASR) would be able to type at three times the speed of a good typist.
