FCC Chooses Minis Over Personals

Article Abstract:

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) selected minicomputers, at a cost-per-user of $5,000, with terminals located in individual departments, to automate office functions. Minicomputers with terminals, rather than personal computers, were selected because of lower cost and the FCC's philosophy that work is not personal in nature. If an employee is working on a personal computer and is absent for a day, other members of the unit cannot get to that employee's information. The FCC prefers taking a division of twenty-five employees and giving them eight or nine terminals.
