Fetching the news: turn your laptop into a daily newspaper

Article Abstract:

The majority of quality newspapers are now online and users can access them from anywhere. Users can also configure their browsers to develop a hybrid paper that contains specific areas of interest, such as technology, sports and politics. To create a customized newspaper online, users need a list of sites and a browser. Users should add the online paper that pertains to their areas of interest. For example, the Los Angeles Times is an excellent source for entertainment information. The San Jose Mercury News is an excellent paper for technology information that provides comprehensive coverage of Silicon Valley. Established newspapers must refocus their efforts to accomodate the Internet as a new medium. Deadlines become perpetual and spark the debate over whether rough drafts should be posted on the Internet.

Online backup: playing it safe

Article Abstract:

Backing up files is a significant problem when using a notebook computer outside the office. Some people use Internet accounts or access, but this requires an account with online storage, which can be expensive and is not necessarily reliable. A solution involving 'remote vaulting,' with data transfers handled via modem, is recommended. Various companies, including SafeGuard Interactive, with NetTape; Connected Online, with Backup; and McAfee Associates, with WebStor and Personal Vault, offer such services. Tips for selecting a remote storage service are provided. For example, users should ask whether special software is needed, and if so, what type of system is required to run it.
