Pentiums $1,999 and up

Article Abstract:

Several vendors offer enhanced Pentium computers with multimedia capabilities. Acer America's Acer Acros minitower PCs all have quad-speed CD-ROM drives and speakers. The lowest priced version, a 75MHz machine with a 1.2GB hard disk and 14.4 Kbps fax/modem, sells for only $1,999. Compaq also has added three new products to its Presario product line, all with quad-speed CD-ROM drives, fax/modems and speakers, as well as a selection of productivity and educational software. Compaq's Pentium offerings now include PCI slots. Intelesys' new multimedia PCs also include CD-ROM drives and fast modems, and start at $1,299. Intelesys' Pro machines include PCI slots, wave table audio synthesis, and 1GB hard drives. NEC also offers a multimedia PC with similar equipment and Plug and Play technology. Packard Bell's lineup of multimedia PCs includes a twin CD-ROM model that lets users listen to an audio CD while running software on another CD.

Multiprocessor systems target NT

Article Abstract:

Several microcomputer vendors are offering new multiprocessor systems designed for the execution of processor-intensive applications hosted by the Windows NT operating system. Windows NT now runs on Intel Pentium-, PowerPC- and DEC Alpha-based systems, and vendors of such systems are exploiting its support of two or more processors. Advanced Logic Research's $4,295 Evolution Dual6 Model 1-16NT, for example, has a slot for plugging in a second 150MHz Pentium Pro processor. SAG Electronics offers systems that support one to four Pentium processors for prices starting at $11,199. FirePower Systems is offering PowerPC 604-based workstations with up to four microprocessors running Windows NT. DeskStation Technology's under-$7,000 Raptor 3 workstations run Windows NT but with DEC's 333MHz Alpha 21164 processor. National Computers Plus's Viper 1000 and 300 workstations also employ DEC's Alpha RISC processors.

DVD portables

Article Abstract:

The first crop of DVD notebooks from Toshiba, Panasonic and IBM boast fast CPUs and graphics chips. Toshiba's 7.9-lb Tecra 750CDT will accept the company's forthcoming DVD-ROM module. The $2,399 Tecra comes with a 233MHz Pentium MMX CPU, 5.1GB hard disk and 13.3-in screen that supports 1,600-by-1,200 resolution in 16-bit color. Panasonic's $5,999 CF-63 comes with an 166MHz Pentium MMX processor, 13.3-in active-matrix screen, 3.24GB hard disk and 4MB of VRAM. The magnesium-alloy casing pushes the weight to 8.7 lbs. The DVD-ROM cannot be hot-swapped with the floppy drive. IBM's 7.8-lb ThinkPad 770, priced from $5,000 to $7,000, features a 200MHz or 233MHz Pentium MMX chip, 13.3- or 14.1-in active-matrix LCD screen with 1,024-by-768 resolution and 5.1GB hard disk. A DVD-ROM is optional.
