Speaking Practically: System Planning Demands Quality People

Article Abstract:

The implementation of a computer system can often be more critical than the actual computer itself. Careful planning and a willingness to compromise are necessary in order to ensure a smooth transition. A person who is capable, well-respected and decisive should be appointed to oversee and supervise the transition. The person who satisfies these characteristics would most likely be able to allay the fears and apprehensions of employees during the transition period. An office systems manager should also possess good communications skills as well as diplomacy. A transition period that sustains high morale can be as beneficial as the computer facilities being installed.

Encouraging signs of support are seen. Speaking Practically: Teamwork and the Automated Office

Article Abstract:

The elimination of certain activities through office automation has precipitated the fear that social interaction accompanying the activities would also be eliminated. The productivity that is expected to result from removing certain tasks is not guaranteed. Automation planning must take into consideration the users' desires and concerns, thereby instilling enthusiasm and motivation.
