Technology, Standardization and Use of Local Area Networks

Article Abstract:

A local area network (LAN) is characteristic of a star, bus or ring mode. These modes use CSMA-CD or token passing access methods, modulation in transmission methods, multiplexing methods of time-sharing and frequency-sharing, packet and line exchange and stranded-wire cable, coaxial cable and optical fiber transmission media. The standardization for the LAN format is being promoted through the European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA) and the Technical Committee 802 by the IEEE. The connection of various types of LANs is expected to expand its scope of applications. A table illustrates the LAN configurations.

Local Office Bypass Will Be the Demise of ISDN Implementation in the U.S

Article Abstract:

Local telephone switching offices are not being used by 25.2 percent of companies for corporate telecommunications. ISDN systems are based on PSTN which involves digital switching, transmission and signaling. The CCITT has ruled that ISDN systems must interface with interexchange networks. Bell operating companies must supply equal access to interexchange users by 1986. A major problem is that corporate abandonment of PSTN could damage ISDN. VDC feels that local telco's should be given the chance to compete.
