Telecommunications

Article Abstract:

The unchecked growth of centralized computing, distributed systems, and stand-alone computers is giving managers a headache, One solution is to institute obligatory approval for all purchases and suppliers. The limitations of older computers can cause problems for local area network systems. Products designed to alleviate incompatibility include the IBM Systems Network Architecture interface and Microcom's networking protocol. Easy access to data poses security problems for which passwords and staff integrity are the main controls.

Telecommunications

Article Abstract:

Major enhanced network systems are provided by IBM and American Bell. IBM offers data flow control through the Information Network with System Network Architecture linkage for connecting computers. The system requires IBM or IBM compatible hardware and software. Network Services provides a 'turnkey' service of installation and management. American Bell's AIS Net-1000 is more costly than IBM's. The AIS Net-1000 does not require compatible terminals.

Telecommunications

Article Abstract:

The data communications world has six basic forms of protocols. A network administrator must be concerned with incompatibility between terminals and protocols. Protocol conversion is often accomplished with a 'black box.' Some protocol conversion is more economical in a large minicomputer like the IBM Series-1. Finally, intelligent value added networks are beginning to perform the conversion.
