The PC Battle: A Report from the Trenches

Article Abstract:

Modern Office Procedures surveyed 389 owners of microcomputers. Users were asked about brands, use, number of systems owned, software, future plans, point of purchase, as well as complaints. Their results showed that more companies and individuals are purchasing personal computers or microcomputers and an increasing number of users are buying systems that can hook into networks. MOP estimates that purchases of PC's will increase by 100 per cent in a year and those surveyed rented the available models. Forecasting and word processing functions are the most desired, and many want printers. Complaints ranged from poor documentation and slowness, to limited disk capacity. Users saw the word processing and forecasting systems as invaluable time and money savers. Apple is losing out to IBM in the PC market with 44,022 average sales compared to 26,920 for Apple. Other companies are close behind. Graphs of points of purchase, market shares, and user ratings are included.
