A span for all seasons

Article Abstract:

Bolton Wanderers Football Club has opened its new 25 million pounds sterling soccer stadium. The Reebok stadium is an outstanding example of modern football architecture, with four lightweight curved roofs designed to give the illusion that they float above the stadium. The complex, which seats 25,000, was designed by architect Derek Wilson of the Lobb Partnership. Steelworker contractor Watson wanted the structure to be simplified and proposed a less complex cantilevered roof, but Lobb insisted that the original design be retained.

Forum to probe pitched roof defects

Article Abstract:

The Construction Quality Forum, which is supported by the UK government, is soon to hold a meeting to look into the construction of pitched roofs. It has taken this decision because its defects database has detected many problems with pitched roofs. The meeting will bring together representatives from leading contractors and from the BEC and the National House Building Council. It has already been established that many problems relate to how slates and tiles are fixed to pitched roofs, rather than to the materials.

It's turf at the top

Article Abstract:

The growing popularity of roof gardens in the UK is due partly to higher awareness of environmental issues among architects. Some critics argue that 'eco-roofs' are mere gimmicks, which are costly to maintain and offer few benefits to justify the expense. However Jonathan Hines of architects Architype says that eco-roofs offer practical benefits, by cutting running costs and protecting the roof membrane of flat roofs from temperature extremes.
