ARCUK to gain consumer role

Article Abstract:

Architects Registration Council UK (ARCUK), registration body for Britain's 32,000 architects, is to be the subject of an independent review aiming to turn it into a regulatory organization with a strict code of conduct. Environment ministers want ARCUK to protect consumers from bad design work. Housing minister, Sir George Young, has announced a six-month review to be undertaken by John Warne, formerly the Office of Fair Trading's deputy director general.

Industry dumps tendering watchdog

Article Abstract:

The National Joint Consultative Committee (NJCC), the tendering monitoring body for the UK construction industry, is to be disbanded, with its work being taken over by the Construction Industry Board (CIB). Top officials at the NJCC believe that the CIB will be no more successful than they have been in imposing sanctions on companies which abuse the tendering system. This is because there are considerable legal obstacles to doing so.
