Atkins takes back seat on BRE bid

Article Abstract:

Senior managers from building consultant W S Atkins will participate in a new research foundation established by University College, London, England, to bid for the Building Research Establishment (BRE). Atkins no longer plans to make a direct takeover bid for the BRE as it believes the BRE's independence would be called into question. The BRE is being sold off by the UK Department of the Environment (DOE). The foundation's bid is not thought to involve the exchange of money. The DOE will probably announce a shortlist of bids which meet its criteria by the end of November 1996.

Bovis-Atkins mega-merger 'imminent.'

Article Abstract:

It has been known since Aug 1998 that Bovis Construction is seeking a partner. It now seems likely that this partner will be WS Atkins. The merger of these two companies would create an extremely large engineering, project management and outsourcing concern. Observers point out that there would be very little overlap between the two companies, while the merged operation would become a key player in private finance initiative deals. It is believed to be less likely that a merger will take place between Tarmac and Amec.
