Balfour's cultural revolution

Article Abstract:

Leading contractors are going to have to undertake extensive cultural changes in order to adapt to new procurement procedures, according to Peter Mason, chairman of Balfour Beatty. Lump-sum, fixed-price contracts will become more common, and design-construct jobs will need fewer site staff than were used with traditional contracts. The company is a pioneer in the response to changes in the basic principles of contracting, especially in the road contracts sector.

Amec to cut 'run-of-the-mill' UK operations

Article Abstract:

Amec, the third-largest contractor in the Uk, will shed domestic jobs as it moves away from ordinary UK contracting activities and focuses on foreign activities instead. It believes that it is not worth competing for a falling volume of work in UK contracting, so will concentrate on larger value-added projects. It is also looking to its two UK engineering design centres to play a larger role.

Majors focus on core skills

Article Abstract:

The UK's leading contractors are increasingly shedding peripheral operations, having decided to focus on core areas. Observers believe that this is the result of a fall in the amount of money being made available in contracting. Tarmac, for example, is to sell off its plant business, while McAlpine is to review its contracting activities and Mowlem is dropping three non-core operations.
