Bishop Auckland seeks millennium rebirth

Article Abstract:

The managers of the Bishop Auckland General Hospital, Durham, United Kingdom, are planning to sign a contract, worth 30 million pounds sterling, within the private finance initiative scheme. A study carried out in 1994 found that one-fifth of the hospital was not in a suitable condition to provide health care. The wards in the general hospital were of satisfactory condition but much of the hospital was built in the first half of the century and therefore would need to be adapted. It is expected that the hospital renovation work will start later in 1997 and will be completed by the year 2000.

Creaky Chepstow banks on health overhaul

Article Abstract:

A survey in 1994 of Chepstow Hospital, Wales, found that 44% of the building was not acceptable for use as a health care facility and 41% of the building would need to undergo repair work before the year 2000. Renovation work was also required in order for the building to comply with fire safely rules. It is expected that a new hospital which would incorporate areas for therapists, general practitioners and outpatients will be built within the private finance initiative scheme.

Deal-threatening blow: technicalities delay financial close at Dartford Hospital

Article Abstract:

Financial lending institutions financing a National Health Service (NHS) trust hospital construction project are worried that the Trust may be forced to stop the project at a later date for legal reasons. Dartford & Gravesham NHS Trust may not have the authority to agree Private Funding Initiative contracts, say bankers. The Trust says that it is protected by the NHS Community Care Act of 1990 and is authorised to form contracts of this nature, however.
