Boating wins big in Florida fee fight

Florida Gov. Lawton Chiles' move to cut to 5% the original 20% proposed lease fee charged to boat show owners is regarded as victory for the state's boating industry. The decision is being attributed mainly to election year politicking. The state's Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) original proposal was to charge owners 20% of the revenue they collect from docks on state-owned submerged lands during a show. DEP also proposed extending the boat show fee to all special marine events, including regattas, parades and fireworks displays. However, the event fee now applies only to boat shows. The agency, meanwhile, was requested to monitor submerged-land revenues and after a year, report back to the governor on the impact of the fee changes.

Solar sails may propel ferries at 2000 Olympics

Article Abstract:

A harbor ferry powered by solar sails could be one of the attractions at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The solar sails function as wings to catch the wind and solar collectors as power source for an electric motor. The solar-powered ferry is the brainchild of Robert Dane, founder of Solar Sailor Co. A prototype of the ferry, a catamaran, average 6.2 knots and traveled 57 kilometers in five hours using its solar batteries. The catamaran has two wings, each on a hull, made from fiberglass and carbon fiber composite material.

OMC work to rebuild FICHT credibility

Article Abstract:

Outboard Marine Corp (OMC) of Waukegan, IL, will release the 2000 model of its FICHT outboard motor engines. The new engine boasts of low-emission technology that company executives claim is free from the carbon sooting problem that has been the problem of earlier FICHT models. OMC, which received numerous complaints regarding FICHT engine models from 1998 and 1999, is also planning to dispatch technicians who will retrofit those engines for free.
