Built by robots. Lived in by Japanese. Driven by the DTI

Article Abstract:

The UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is seeking to develop trading links with the Japanese housebuilding industry, which constructs mainly pre-fabricated houses. Japanese house owners expect pre-fabricated houses to have a life of about 25 years, after which they will build another house more suited to their needs. British housebuilders construct about 200,000 houses each year compared with Japanese housebuilders who build 1.3 million houses each year. The DTI hopes to encourage a transfer of trade skills and develop inward investment.

It is important that urban planning focuses both on the quality of the environment and on strengthening the local economy, according to Lee Shostak, head of the European operation of US planning and urban design concern EDAW. The company's multidisciplinary approach means that it is able to attract very talented employees and gain a wide range of contracts. Shostak has worked in the UK since the mid-1970s, and regards the UK's plan-led system as extremely effective.
