China: building the economic miracle

Article Abstract:

Construction output in China rose threefold to $89 billion between 1978 and 1994, and there are now 20,000 active building sites in Shanghai, China, alone. China's construction industry is likely to continue to expand as the government seeks to attract investors and labour costs remain low. Many UK construction concerns are seeking to establish a presence in China, but are facing strong competition from companies from other western European countries, South Korea, Japan and the US.

Smashing the cartels

Article Abstract:

The new UK Competition Act 2000 may have implications for the building materials industry which has been accused of making price-fixing arrangements in the past. The Office of Fair Trading will have powers to fine firms of around 10% of their UK turnover for practices which breach the new law. Some industry observers suggest the new law will cause price-fixing to disappear. Although others point out many firms are consolidating which may lead to the formation of cartels.
