Computer hitch may hit JLE spring deadline

Article Abstract:

It is believed that there are problems with the central control unit of the computerized integrated communications system being supplied by electronics group GPT under its 61 million pounds sterling Contract 204 to the Jubilee Line Extension in London, England. These problems could mean that the North Greenwich to Stratford section may not open in line with its revised spring 1999 deadline. It is possible that London Underground will have to operate the system manually if the problem cannot be resolved quickly.

East side story

Article Abstract:

The extension of London's Jubilee line will stimulate growth in east London and play an important role in extending London internationally. The line will be able to take 22,000 passengers an hour from Waterloo to Canary Wharf. The journey is expected to take 22 minutes. The extension of the line was proposed in 1974 and reintroduced in 1987 by O and Y (Olympia and York.) Up to Oct 23 1992 the government has blocked the scheme because of cost. O and Y is providing 400 million pounds sterling-worth of finance.

Penalty escape bid on JLE

Article Abstract:

The Canary Wharf Station on the Jubilee Line Extension in London, England, must be open by Nov 1998 if London Transport is to avoid triggering a penalty clause. It is believed that the station could be open on time, but signalling problems may cut services to levels at which the penalty clause would be triggered. London Transport is hoping to renegotiate the terms of the penalty clause, offering to waive its right to retain possession on an area of the Canary Wharf development.
