Cost update

Article Abstract:

The UK Heating and Ventilating Contractors Association and the Manufacturing Science and Finance Union have agreed on a three year deal which gives operatives a 7% increase in wages. A trained senior operative receives 7.48 pounds sterling per hour. Advanced plumbers in England and Wales have received an increase of 6.5%. Their hourly rate is 7.20 pounds sterling per hour. The cost of a representative collection of building materials declined by 1.6% during 1998-1999. The cost of surface finishes will be dependent on the type of building contract and the region within the UK.

Cost update

Article Abstract:

There has been little change in construction and housebuilding materials prices since early 1999, in spite of rises in input and output costs in the manufacturing industry, according to the UK Office for National Statistics. However, there have been a number of specific price changes. The largest price rises have been seen for roof insulation, PVCu soil pipes and fittings and PVCu waste pipes and fittings. The pound has been strong, but some of the largest rises have been in sectors where imported metals represent a significant proportion of the cost.
