Fire doors have been proven to prevent the spread of fire in buildings, but although there are several competing certification systems for doors, none imposes criteria that meets insurers' demands. There is fragmentation in the supply chain, with fire engineers and building control officers treating a fire door as an entire unit, whereas only 10% of fire doors purchased each year in the UK are sold in that way. The Loss Prevention Council wants a system for certifying fire doors to include the door leaf and all other fittings.

There can be a number of design challenges associated with staggered terraced housing. In particular, complex waterproofing problems can arise because the party wall must serve as an internal wall where the houses overlap and an external wall where they do not. Moisture can run through an external wall that then becomes an internal wall unless careful consideration is given to the design of a combination of roof flashings, damp proof courses and cavity flashings.
