Article Abstract:

A cost study commissioned by the property division of the British Airports Authority, Lynton and undertaken by Bovis Construction and Davis Langdon and Everest found that building in US is on average 32% cheaper than in the UK. This is because of overspecification for cladding and services, extra costs of finishes and higher levels of staff. The study compared differences between building the Combined Operations Centre at Heathrow in the UK and at Charlotte, North Carolina. The Heathrow building is costing 17.1 million pounds sterling. If it was built at Charlotte it would be 5.43 million pounds sterling cheaper.

Flight stimulator

Article Abstract:

The 340 million pounds sterling extension of Zaventem airport, Belgium is the largest private sector contract in the country. The project will be completed in 1995, making the airport 3 times its original size. Zaventem is expected to become the premier airport in Europe and passenger figures are estimated to increase from 9 million to 30 million by the year 2010. There are 30 subcontract packages and these are all joint ventures because of Belgium's liability law. Architects and contractors carry joint responsibility for defects and it helps if liability is spread.

Article Abstract:

Two concrete brick manufacturers are optimistic about the future for their products. Boral Edenhall is opening a new plant while Powell Duffryn Bricks is launching a new range. The manufacturers claim that their falling market share is due to price cutting by clay brick makers but that technical improvements have made concrete bricks much better. Concete bricks represent eight percent of the total brick market in 1992 and are priced between 110 and 125 pounds sterling per thousand.
