Fun palace evolution

Article Abstract:

The Dome, a leisure complex in Doncaster, England, was opened in 1989. The development, which includes a leisure pool, an ice rink, five squash courts and an indoor bowling green, cost 26 million pounds sterling. It has proved a key element in urban regeneration in the area, and continues to attract 1 million visitors a year. Most visitors find no problems with the internal environment, although glare is sometimes caused by the large areas of glazing. The building has proved hard to maintain, as it has a complicated network of exposed steelwork and services.

Focused group

Article Abstract:

WT Partnership, winner of the 1998 Building Award for Surveying Practice of the Year, regards itself as a specialist quantity surveying firm focusing on cost and financial management. It has decided to focus on straightforward construction costings, a move which has been welcomed by clients. It has gained a strong reputation for providing the service the client is seeking, rather than the service it wants to give. It saw fee income in the UK rise by 21% to 9.2 million pounds sterling in 1997.

Social circuit

Article Abstract:

A lack of places to put office documentation and too much noise generated from a coffee shop are just two the of the complaints workers at the PowerGen headquarters in Coventry, UK, have made about their building. The innovative structure was built in 1995 and is ventilated by natural fresh-air. The interior is stimulating to work in although it can get quite hot during the summer months for those on the top floors.
