Funding hiatus hits lottery: ROH redevelopment under threat from lack of funds to match Arts Council award
Article Abstract:
The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London was awarded a grant of 55 million pounds sterling from the proceeds of the National Lottery and a further 93 million pounds sterling is secured. However promoters have been unable to raise the further 65 million pounds sterling from the private sector, required to match the lottery grant. They are awaiting a firm pledge of cash from the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts, but the scheme to redevelop the ROH is in doubt, as are many other capital projects that need to raise money to match lottery grants.

Act now
Article Abstract:
The Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act becomes law next spring, and the main changes, such as the introduction of universal adjudication and new rules for fairer payment will affect construction firms. Adjudication aims to make construction disputes faster and less costly, and fairer payment rules aim to reduce payment disputes. However construction companies have done little to prepare for the new act as the contents of the Scheme for Construction Contracts remain unclear.

Construction to benefit from lottery success
Article Abstract:
Camelot, operator of the National Lottery, has stated that revenue for good causes will be much higher than expected. This will benefit the construction industry, as National Lottery funding for construction will be 30% higher than first forecast. Each of the five distributors of National Lottery funds have already received 52 million pounds sterling, and a new scratch card game will also boost revenue.
