MPA Team battles USPS

Bipartisan law and lobbying company Gates Ellis and Rouvelas Meeds LLP and public relations firm Dittus Communications have signed up with the Magazine Publishers of America to fight the US Postal Service's (USPS) proposed 15% magazine rate hike. The $10-million advocacy campaign is intended to catch the attention of Washington officials and the American public, change USPS's way of doing business and persuade it to lower its rate increase for periodicals.

Group asks congress to curb USPS competitive activities

Article Abstract:

The electronic commerce industry has been lobbying for the US Congress to limit the entry of the US Postal Service (USPS) into the industry. The US Intenet Industries Assn has correspoded with 38 members of Congress who are invovlved in oversight of the USPS, digital signatures and technology policy to air their concern over the direct competition being provided by USPS. The USPS has launched new e-commerce initiatives and has indicated that it will continue to launch new programs that are in direct competition with private industry.

Political scandal touches DM world

In his plea agreement, lobbyist Jack Abramoff has mentioned that he paid money to the wife of a senior staff member of a politician to influence opposition to legislation increasing postal rates. Implications of this scandal for direct marketers are discussed.
