Highways Agency joins lean research

Article Abstract:

The UK Highways Agency will link with WS Atkins and Balfour Beatty to study lean production techniques through Bath University's Agile Construction Initiative. The Highways Agency will make information available to researchers, who are looking at examples of both good and poor practice. The focus of the research will be on the production process, rather than on problems that have arisen with contracts. The Highways Agency hopes that participating in this initiative will help to highlight ways in which waste can be reduced and cost savings can be made.

Capital gains in Cardiff

Article Abstract:

The local economy of Cardiff, Wales is benefiting from investment by computer companies and the staging of world sports events, such as the Rugby World Cup in 1998. The construction industry is worried over fears of skilled staff shortages and difficulties arising from a lack of suitable building plots.

This little company went to market

Article Abstract:

Construction contractor Connaught faced considerable challenges in the run-up to its flotation on Nov 30, 1998. Small capitalization companies were not popular among investors at that time, and there were particular problems for construction firms. However, the company's shares are now trading at 149.5p, up by 24.5p from their opening price. The flotation will give Connaught a valuable source of funding for its expansion plans.
