IBM-Equifax alliance takes piece of E-commerce pie

Article Abstract:

International Business Machines Corp. of Armonk, NY, announced that it has recently formed a strategic alliance with Equifax Inc. of Atlanta, NY, in a move to bolster electronic commerce. Both companies cited consumer security fears and the inability of firms to verify identities during online transactions as the two major barriers to e-commerce. Under the alliance, IBM will provide and market the software, while Equifax will supply remote identity-verification services. Equifax will also serve as the third party that issues, renews and nulls digital certificates. The digital certification is slated to be released in July 1998.
