Industry urges jobs boost

Article Abstract:

The UK construction industry is seeking government support for its efforts to encourage an increase in investment in construction. It believes that there is the potential to bring about the recovery of the industry, which employs almost 1.5 million people, and to create 100,000 new jobs over the next three-four years. Industry representatives are emphasising the links between construction and the economy as a whole.

PFI 'illusion' under attack

Article Abstract:

The UK government's private finance initiative (PFI) has not served to improve the situation in the construction industry, according to senior industry figures. Few PFI projects have actually started on site, and the level of new construction orders continues to fall. Construction output will decline by 1% in 1996, according to the Building Material Producers, and the industry could see up to 20,000 job losses.
