Innovations in R&D labs

Article Abstract:

Roofing asphalt has evolved from a simple by-product of the oil refining industry to a sophisticated, polymer-based science that can tailor mixtures to specific roofing applications and meet increasingly strignent industry standards for hot- and cold-weather resistance and increased durability. The Superpave specifications in 1993 have driven research on asphalt and modifiers and challenged the asphalt industry to provide long- lasting and low-maintenance roads in the US. Polymer suppliers have also responded by developing products designed to meet the Superpave requirements, including such novel approaches as alloyed polymers, new polymer combinations and an advanced vulcanizing technology.

Warming trend: cold applications of modified bitumen systems

Article Abstract:

The latest trends in the application of modified bitumen roofing membranes have suggested an increasing frequency in the use of cold adhesive systems. A number of factors have contributed to the growing interest in alternative applications to hot applications of asphalt based roofing systems. An analysis of these factors suggests that the use of cold adhesive products in properly specified and applied modified bitumen roofing systems will provide many years of outstanding performance compared to hot asphalt systems.

Time for change at the U.S. Mint

Article Abstract:

Johns Manville Roofing Systems' newly-upgraded bitumen system was installed at the San Francisco Mint in California to replace the old roof, which used a different type of membrane. Architects at the Woodford/Sloane recognized the roofing's need for proper drainage, thus, tapered insulation was put in place. The roof system includes two layers of insulation, a E'NRG'Y 2 polyisocyanurate and a Fesco Board insulation.
