It's a hard life

Article Abstract:

The genetics visitor centre of the International Centre for Life, Newcastle, England, has a very complicated roofing design. The roof will be covered in pre-patinated copper and supported by steel tubes arranged tripod formation. Builders Laing Northern were very concerned about the construction of the roof and tried to include additional funding in its bid for the 18.2 million pounds sterling contract to build phase two. Terry Farrell and Partners designed the building. The completed building will cost 58.5 million pounds sterling. Phase two is due to be opened during Easter 2000.

Expanding the waste lines

Article Abstract:

Laminated waste oak has the potential to be a very environmentally-friendly material for window frames. It was chosen by architect Steve Costello for the 50 windows required for an extension to the White Lodge Centre care facility in Chertsey, England. The frames were made by Emanuel Whittaker from oak laminates produced by Elam Joinery. They were considerably cheaper than solid oak frames, as there is very little demand for the small-section oak which is used in the laminates. They make effective use of waste wood, and allow the production of a slim, flush-jointed design.
