Laboratory experiments

Article Abstract:

Two UK laboratory construction projects have involved new technical innovations. The Health and Safety Executive relocated its occupational medecine amd hygiene laboratory from London to Sheffield. The project cost 12.2 million pounds sterling. The main aim was flexibility to cope with project changes and low maintenance costs. The site was located in the city centre which was a main construction constraint. The Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food relocated its 5 research centre laboratories to Yorkshire. Flexibility was also paramount but the site was rural. The project cost 60 million pounds sterling.

Farm follows function

Article Abstract:

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in the UK has spent 60 million pounds sterling on new research facilities built near York on a greenfield site. The central science laboratory consists of seven standardised, highly serviced blocks, which are linked, and ductwork has been incorporated around the sides and tops of the buildings. The design has been arranged to ease interaction between staff, not unlike a university campus.
