NHS: guilty of malpractice

Article Abstract:

John Cole has the responsibility of acquiring Northern Ireland's medical facilities with private financing. Cole is head of planning in the Northern Ireland Health Estate, with experience of assessing bids for Private Finance Initiative (PFI) projects. Cole wants designers to be more involved in the PFI process and for health trusts to be more precise in their requirements. Cole also proposes the tender process should be in two stages and also suggests an architectural advisor be appointed to judging panels.

Pass the parcel

Article Abstract:

Design-and-build construction contractors are increasingly unhappy about the growing numbers of clients who force design teams on them without allowing them to influence the design process. Contractors believe that such attitudes are threatening the process that allows them to control design in return for taking the construction risks of a project. Some 80% of design-and-build projects uses novation, while the remainder are working towards client/contractor partnerships.

Client briefing codes 'a waste of time.' (research into client efforts to brief construction teams according to industry best practice)

Article Abstract:

A construction project can be negatively affected if clients attempt to use industry best practice as the basis for briefings to construction teams, according to research from the University of Salford. Furthermore, guidance is often ignored by project managers and architects. This comes at a time when the Construction Industry Board is soon to issue a clients' briefing checklist for industry consultation.
