The family

Article Abstract:

The family owned construction firm Sir Robert McAlpine is led by 81 year old Malcom H McAlpine. The family own the vast majority of shares in the company, which had a turnover of 324 million pounds sterling in 1997, and pretax profits of 7 million pounds sterling. Some industry observers suggest the continued existence of the firm is partly due to the high standard of work produced by project managers and contractors employed by the family. The firm is known for its good quality of work but some customers and contractors find it is not always easy to work alongside the management.

Bringing it all back home

Article Abstract:

Andrew Panter, Managing Director of Wimpey Homes, aims to improve the operating margins of the company which fell to 2% between Jan-June 1996. He started his new job after Tarmac gave Wimpey its housing business - McLean Homes - in exchange for Wimpey's minerals and contracting businesses. To restore the housing construction business Panter intends to concentrate on improving customer service and on providing high quality houses. He hopes that satisfied customers will recommend Wimpey and increase Wimpey's share of the British housing market.
