Marketer: Visa, MasterCard not deterring smart cards

Article Abstract:

The delay on the introduction of smart cards is being blamed to the refusal of card issuers, such as Visa and MasterCard, to apply the technology. The Justice Department claims that MasterCard limited some plans in 1987 when an executive committee refused to proceed with the smart cards without the approval from Visa. Meanwhile, several other factors have been cited for the smart cards delay. These includes the lack of proper software tools for combining smart cards into existing computer systems as well as restraint on the parts of banks to implement the new technology.
