Quick off the blocks

Article Abstract:

James Developments has been testing the thin joint mortar system from Celcon at its site in Burwell, England. It has now built seven houses using this system, and plans to use it for all the remaining 85 Cranleigh brick-clad homes at the site. The system uses glue mortar, which sets hard very quickly and thus makes it possible to work with much larger block sizes. It has been established that blockwork is going up at least 20% quicker with this system, with a fall in labour rates balancing out any rise in material costs. Using the blocks has improved the standard of the external brickwork.

Tradis Tardis

Article Abstract:

The Integer Group is managing the construction of a pair of semi-detached houses in Cherhill, England, for the North Wiltshire Housing Association. These houses feature Fillcrete Building Systems' Tradis, which gives a house shell in a series of closed structural panels. This is the first time that this system has been used for roof construction. The use of a room in the roof design will give an internal floor area of 110 sq mt, instead of the conventional 85 sq mt.

Stop groaning

Article Abstract:

Building manufacturer Trus Joist Macmillan's Silent Floor system is a fast, effective and lightweight flooring system. It covers up to six meter distances without joists and is cost-efficient. The system uses I-beams consisting of oriented-strand boarding and laminated timber pieces. It is a relatively new system that has yet to prove itself, although one-year tests have proven to be positive.
