Safety catches

Article Abstract:

The introduction of the UK's Construction (Design and Management) regulations in March 1995 has created the post of planning supervisor within the construction industry. The planning supervisor is an essential member of the design team and is responsible for making sure that project design incorporates safety as an important element. However, there is concern over the proper integration of planning supervisors into the project team and unless it is carried out smoothly they will fail to make a true contribution to improving safety standards.

PAYE check

Article Abstract:

The tighter controls over self-employment in the UK have had effects throughout the construction industry, as contractors transfer their workers to PAYE. The new regulations came into force in Apr 1997. Most workers are suffering pay reductions, as they are no longer able to offset expenses against tax, and because employers are offering no more than basic entitlements in holiday and sickness pay. Smaller subcontractors are either struggling with increased costs, or passing them on to the larger contractors.

Housing experiment in the dock

Article Abstract:

Britannia Village is a new 'urban village' planned for the London Docklands, providing social housing for the majority of tower block Barnwood Court's tenants. The village will include shops, workshops, a pub and a community centre. Specialist management companies will act as code-enforcers to take care of the properties, while the Peabody Trust and the LDDC will look after the community needs of the residents. However there are concerns that there is a lack of social infrastructure investment.
