Stiff upper ellipse

Article Abstract:

The Jubilee Line station at Canary Wharf in London, England, where construction is due to begin later in 1997, will feature an extremely unusual roof made from curved glass panels. The curved shape will ensure maximum light penetration, with the glass being 40% fritted to prevent solar gain. The design will give good light diffusion at night, thus making the station seem less intimidating to travellers. The roof has been designed by Foster and Partners, with Ove Arup and Partners acting as facade and structural engineer.

Swave and sophisticated

Article Abstract:

There is a strong trend towards the use of S-curve roofs on new buildings in the UK, both for one-off projects and for designs which are likely to be repeated a number of times. S-curve roofs are regarded as representing natural ventilation, which is now being more widely used, and some designers believe that they can even assist natural ventilation. Their main drawback is that they can be expensive. S-curve roofs made of less expensive materials can present maintenance problems.

Appealing ceiling: structured design is becoming a key factor in the big supermarkets' battle for customers

Article Abstract:

Asda's new Trafford Park branch features a gently curving aluminium skinned barrel vault roof running the length of the store. The roof design was a significant factor in the success of the store, and internally, it is in stark contrast to traditional suspended ceilings. Natural light was introduced into the roof space with the use of polycarbonate glazing.
