Swinging Stevenage

Article Abstract:

Construction industry professionals in the key marginal constituency of Stevenage, England, are keen to emphasise that a future government in the UK must ensure that the country's present revival is not merely temporary, bringing a return to difficult business conditions when it comes to an end. Some believe that the Conservative party has shown that it can secure low inflation, and express reservations about how effective a future Labour government would be at managing the economy. The views of the Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidates are presented.

PIMS number one

Article Abstract:

The construction management team re-designing and building the Royal Opera House in London employed the services of a document management system which is based on the concept of producing a paperless information management system (PIMS). Information is easily accessed and directed to the relevant people without reams of paper being passed around the construction site. The PIMS holds up to 80,000 architectural and construction drawings, with a further 150,000 documents.

Shepherd pioneers 'yuppie' prefabs

Article Abstract:

Yorkon, a subsidiary of contractor Shepherd, is looking to adapt for housebuilding the methods used in fast-track McDonald's restaurants. It is hoping to develop a prototype build-to-rent housing scheme using prefabricated modules. The work will be undertaken in partnership with housing research concern Joseph Rowntree Foundation. The most likely tenants will be young, single professionals looking to live in inner city areas.
