The laboratories of pharmaceuticals giant SmithKline Beecham's in Essex, England, are built to encourage scientists to talk and collaborate with one another during work. The New Frontiers Science Park laboratories cost 253 million pounds sterling to build and, amongst other laboratory facilities, contain a 46,000 square meter deoxyribonucleic acid research centre. Each laboratory in the building is very well equiped with specialist, labour-saving, technology.

Investment of 16 million pounds sterling has been made in the refurbishment and extension of the Victorian gothic courthouse in Manchester, England, which was built in 1875. The entire circulation pattern of the building has been reversed, with a central service courtyard being roofed over and forming the basis for two upper floors. The building work was undertaken by Laing North West.

The design and construction of the Manchester Aquatics Centre, Manchester, England, is presented. The two new indoor swimming pools cost 32.2 million pounds sterling to build. The centre will be used during the Commonwealth Games which will be held in 2002.
