UK housebuilder Barratt Homes tops the league table of homebuilders in 1998, with a turnover of 799.2 million pounds sterling. Barratt built 8,334 units during 1998 with an average price per unit of 95,900 pounds sterling. Beazer Homes came second in the league table with a turnover of 521.4 million pounds sterling during 1998. Beazer built 6405 units during 1998 with an average unit price of 81,400 pound sterling. Consolidation within the market has lead to a large number of smaller firms being taken over by large organisations.

The right Calibre

Article Abstract:

The UK-based Centre for Performance Improvement in Construction at the Building Research Establishment has developed a management accounting tool to measure the productivity on construction sites. The Calibre systems was first tried out during the construction of the Integer Millennium House project, during the summer of 1998. Each type of building activity is measured by Calibre to produce a productivity benchmark which can be applied to all building projects.

The designs for Bridgewater Place, Leeds, and the Spinningfields project, Manchester, are assessed. The buildings, designed by Abbey Holford Rowe, will be amongst the tallest in the region and include 27 and 16-storey towers.
