Article Abstract:

It is wrong to claim that construction managers obtain discounts from trade contractors in return for work being awarded elsewhere, according to Schal Managing Director Malcolm Bairstow. This does not happen at Tarmac, Schal's parent company, and he does not believe that it happens at any leading construction management firm. He accepts that the construction industry is being affected by skills shortages, but also feels that the industry is more able to deal with demand than is widely assumed. He feels that Schal will be rejuvenated as a result of the departure of five senior managers in autumn 1997.

Positive thinking

Article Abstract:

It is vital to improve understanding of the labour market, according to new UK Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Chief Executive Peter Lobban. He will be responsible for ensuring that there is a constant supply of labour to construction companies. The CITB hopes to overcome anticipated shortages of labour in certain sectors of the market by running construction 'crash courses' for new entrants to the industry and for those who have left the industry. He believes that forecasting and assessing the effectiveness of training are very important.

Meet the most successful man in construction

Article Abstract:

It is very pleasant to live in the UK, where foreigners are made welcome, according to construction concern Jarvis Chief Executive Paris Moayedi. However, he still remains outside the business mainstream, and this may be the reason behind the very strong growth that Jarvis has experienced. Financial analysts are very positive about Moayedi in public, but privately have some reservations, feeling that the company's dramatic revival may be too good to last.
