Acceleration from the base engines in Hyundai's 1995-1999 Accent models is adequate for city driving with the use of either manual or automatic shift. Highway passing requires a long stretch of open road, however. The engine also strains hard when climbing up even small hills. The Accent can be a reasonably purchase provided owners can overcome the interior noise problem. Reliability is also a question. Overall, something larger for everyday transportation is recommended.

Hyundai's 1996-1999 Elantra models represent a considerable improvement in terms of roominess, quiet running and all-around competence on the road. These second-generation Elantras are quieter than their predecessors at highway speeds, and the engines become noisy only when pushed hard. Acceleration is good with the use of either manual or automatic shift. These cars' suspensions absorb most bumps neatly and provide a stable highway ride.

Hyundai's 1990-1994 Sonata models feature very capable but hardly agile handling and roadholding. Acceleration is fairly impressive with the combination of the 2.4-liter four and five-speed manual shift, but only adequate with automatic shift. Sonatas are sensible, well designed family sedans although they are not the most exciting nor refined cars on the block and are noisier than many other competing products in their class.
