Article Abstract:

Portable computers are available with either Random Access memory (non-permanent) or a hard drive which is parmanent. RAM can only be accessed when the computer is switched on and is measured in bytes. Power saving utilities are being built into the processor chip and several manufacturers offer a suspend mode. Disk storage is in the form of floppy disks and hard disks, and hard disk capacity is currently high.

Portable computers are particularly useful in the sales industry, and notebooks are also ideal for teleworkers who need access to files and databases. However notebooks are expensive to manufacture being a specialised, slow process, and they cost at least 1,000 pounds sterling more than desktop computers. Portable computers fall into three main categories, entry-level notebooks, mid-range and high-end.

The processor chip is the most significant part of a portable computer, and most low end entry level models continue to be dominated by INtel's 486 SL enhanced chip. A new range of Intel chips specifically designed for the notebook are to be introduced. Pentium chips start at a speed of P75MHz and there are super-fast P100-120 MHz chips.
