Alternative medicine

Article Abstract:

The increasing use of alternative medicine include acupuncture, aromatherapy, osteopathy/chiropractic treatment, reflexology, herbalism, and homeopathy. The number of Which? readers who visited an alternative practitioner doubled in 1991 to one in four readers vs 1986 figures. Four of five users believe alternative treatment cured or improved their condition, with 75% stating they would use alternative medicine again. Doctors are becoming increasingly interested in these treatments. Untrained alternative practitioners pose a risk, and consumers should opt for a member of a professional organisation.

The right medicine

Article Abstract:

Patients can become actively involved in managing the medicines prescribed by their doctor by asking questions about the action of a particular medicine on the body and about possible side-effects. Patients should ask questions before the doctor even writes out the prescription to make sure that they receive the most appropriate treatment. Asking the pharmacist for guidance on taking the prescribed medicine and keeping a record of all medicines being taken is also recommended.
